Succulent Watering Guide
Succulents are among the easiest and most rewarding houseplants to care for. Known for their plump, sculptural leaves and vibrant textures, these hardy plants store water within their tissues — meaning they thrive with less attention than most.
The key to success lies in the balance: water deeply, but not too often.
How to Water Your Succulents
-
Check before you water
Always test the soil first. If the top few centimetres feel completely dry, it’s time to water. If it’s even slightly damp, wait a few more days. -
Water thoroughly
Pour slowly and evenly around the base of the plant until water begins to drain from the pot. This encourages the roots to grow deep and strong. -
Let it drain completely
Never leave water sitting at the bottom of the pot or in a saucer — standing water quickly leads to root rot. -
Adapt to the seasons
-
Spring & Summer (growing season): Water every 2–3 weeks, or when the soil is fully dry.
-
Autumn & Winter (rest period): Water lightly once a month, as growth slows down.
-
-
Use the right soil and pot
A well-draining succulent mix and a pot with drainage holes are essential for preventing excess moisture.
Extra Tips for Thriving Succulents
-
Water in the morning, allowing leaves and soil to dry throughout the day.
-
Avoid watering directly onto the leaves — moisture trapped between them can cause rot.
-
Use rainwater or filtered water where possible, as succulents prefer low-mineral water.
-
If leaves look soft or wrinkled, it’s a gentle sign they need a drink.
In Short
Soak the soil, then let it dry completely before watering again.
This simple routine mirrors the natural rhythm of desert rainfall — keeping your succulents strong, sculptural, and effortlessly beautiful all year round.
